When you have helped as many businesses as I have, you quickly notice a common issue all businesses face – and that’s getting leads. Some businesses thrive and others really struggle to get the leads in the door or generate the interest.

In this article I will share 7 foolproof ways to generate more leads for zero spend marketing.

Business owners attend endless networking meetings, chamber of commerce meetings and flood their social media platforms with sales posts. All of which yield very little results for the effort taken and no worthwhile leads.

Does any of this sound familiar? I should know, because I was once that very same business owner.

Spending money on thousand pound websites and attending every networking event going IS NOT GOING TO WORK.

Flooding social media platforms with BUY ME NOW posts and connecting to every person on LinkedIn you can find IS NOT GOING TO WORK.

Over the years we have seen a trend and a flaw. That is, a failure on the part of the business owner and a definite failure of the professional they have hired to do a job.

You need to remember this, the professional you hired is getting paid to do the job you have asked for and nothing else, why should they? Thinking outside the box or thinking long term is not what you paid them for.

In 20+ years of Websites, IT and Digital Marketing we have seen an evolution that shows the consumer needs to see more, read more and understand more from you. Before they will even show they are the slightest bit interested in you.

What previously meant they would purchase after seeing 7 of your posts, today finds it more like 13 or 14 before they show an interest and in some cases you can keep going to 20 posts using a variety of platforms.

To help you win at the lead generation game, you need a few things. You need a clear focus on having conversations with prospects and getting in front of your audience on a regular basis.

You need to put in place a Lead Generation System for your business. Liken this to your company van, travelling round collecting leads. Just like any vehicle you need to give it fuel to run, service it and look after it – to get the best performance from it.

This system does not need to be super complicated, but it needs to be able to capture an email address, name and phone number. Then you can have a conversation, send them something useful and talk to them some more, send them some more stuff and start building a relationship with them.

DO NOT sell on day one! This is doomed for failure and this is exactly what so many business owners are doing and think this is the right thing to do.

I’m not sure who has been teaching these business owners marketing or what books they are reading, but this is NOT HOW TO MARKET your business anymore.

Develop Your Own Lead Generation Machine

Once you have your foundations set you can start to develop your lead generation machine, feed it and watch it grow.

Getting leads needs a system of consistent action and you need:

  • A way to capture contact details (this can be a guide, cheat sheet, video – numerous things can be used here).
  • Somewhere to store all of these email and contacts – and no Outlook is not the correct answer.
  • A way to know who you have contacted and what conversations you have had.
  • Sources of traffic and a way to get in front of your ideal audience.

The rest is up to you but in its basic form this is all you need. You can complicate it or you can use your website and a few smart tools to make it all work together.

We have used software like WordPress and MailChimp to make this work, it does not get much trickier than this and can be set up in a few hours. We have also used software like, WordPress, ClickFunnels, Lead Pages, InfusionSoft, Active Campaign, PipeDrive and many others to build a robust system and more.

All you really need to know is how many conversations you need to make a sale. If you talk to ten people and three purchase, you know, to get three new customers you will need to have ten conversations.

This means your lead generation machine needs to pump out 10 leads for every three sales (this is the minimum – but you need to test it).

Then you need to know how much traffic viewing your website, blog or landing page converts into a lead and this could be; for every one hundred visitors, ten of them will give you their contact details.

So now you know you need to get in front of 100 people to get interest from 10 people and sales from 3.

You now have the numbers and a sequence:


100 conversations  >>  10 leads  >>  3 sales

100 >> 10 >> 3

This is your lead generation system, it needs some fine tuning and adjustment to make it run smoother, but this is it, get it out the door, run traffic to it and start getting leads today.

The beauty of all of this is, you can set this up and automate it so all you need to do is have the conversations every time you get 10 sets of contact details and the rest is up to you.
